Abstract

845,146. Controlling vehicles. NEWTON & BENNETT Ltd. April 1, 1959 [April 2. 1958], No. 10521/58. Class 79(5). The pressure in a hydraulic system operating a centrifugal clutch in an automobile operates the throttle through a mechanical connection. The centrifugal clutch 10 with a voluntary clutch withdrawal mechanism 11 is operated from the pedal 12 by the hydraulic system comprising a master cylinder 13 and slave cylinder 14, a branch 16 being taken from the connecting pipe 15 and connected to a diaphragm 17 which operates a lever 18 engaging the arm 19 of the engine throttle 20. An adjustable stop is provided to limit the movement of the diaphragm and is set so that the resultant engine speed with the clutch "out" is just above the critical speed of the centrifugal clutch. The diaphragm has a relatively weak return spring and an adjustable check valve 22 which controls the speed of the return movement.
