Abstract

614,551. Controlling motor vehicles. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. March 18, 1946, No. 8292. Convention date, April 19, 1945. [Class 79 (v)] [Also in Group XXXIV] In a vehicle having hydraulic transmission and hydraulic brakes, on actuation of the brake pedal wheel brakes and a transmission brake are applied, but on release of the brake pedal the transmission brake is maintained on until subsequent actuation of the accelerator pedal. The arrangement is particularly useful with hydraulic transmission to avoid the vehicle creeping when the engine is running at idling speed in neutral. Fig. 1 shows a transmission system comprising a fly-wheel 15, clutch 27, Fottinger-type hydraulic coupling 11, and gearbox 12 embodying a transmission brake, all as described in Specification 602,020, [Group XXIX]. The transmission brake consists of a brake drum 49 and hydraulically-operated brake band 51. As shown in Fig. 2, depression of the brake pedal 60 transmits hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder 61 to the duct 62 and wheel brakes, and to the duct 64, the chamber 67 of the pressure-maintaining device 63, through the spring-loaded valve 74 to the chamber 68 and thence to duct 82 leading to the transmission brake. On release of the brake pedal, pressure in the ducts 62 and 64 drops to a predetermined minimum as normal and releases the wheel brakes, but pressure in the chamber 68 and in the transmission brake system is allowed to drop only slightly by the annular valve 70 which is backed by spring 73, adjustable by screwed collar 78, and the transmission brake is held on. On depression of the accelerator pedal 65, the shaft 81 and face cam 80 are rotated whereby the plunger 77 is axially displaced to open the valve 74 and release the pressure in the transmission brake system.
