Abstract
544,793. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. DODSON, E. Feb. 1, 1941, No. 1335. [Class 135] A remote control system of the kind in which a sender unit forwards a variable fluid-pressure through a pipe line to a receiver unit comprising a power device and control valve actuated by a pressure sensitive device is fitted with a biasing device which is responsive to and normally overridden by the pressure in the pipe line but is operative in the event of failure of the pressure in the pipe line to co-operate with the pressure sensitive device to move the power device to a pre-determined position. Fig. 5 shows a receiver unit for use with the sender unit described in Specification 483,049 for operating the throttle valve of an internal combustion engine used on aircraft and adapted to put the throttle in the position corresponding to cruising speed in the event of the pipe line being fractured. When used to control an aircraft rudder, the rudder is returned to a central position on fracture of the control pipe line. The power piston 11 is coupled by linkage to the throttle valve and is actuated by oil under pressure controlled by a piston valve 12 actuated by fluid pressure admitted through 19 from the control line acting on a spring-loaded diaphragm. A second diaphragm 36 maintains the valve in alignment with its seat and acted on by follow-up springs 37. These springs are variably compressed by movements of the power piston acting through a link 16 and a lever 13 pivoted at 14 to a bracket 15. A third diaphragm subject to control line pressure is adjustably loaded by springs 71 so that in the event of the pressure falling an abutment 74 engages the diaphragm to move the valve into the position required to enable the power piston to move the throttle into the position corresponding to the cruising speed of the aircraft. In the event of the oil pressure failing springs 23 coupled by a link 25 with the lever 13 moves the power piston to the position reouired to open the throttle to a position suitable for starting.
