[Also in Group XXIII] A band knife machine comprises a number of units 1, 2, 3, each with their own driving motor 10, 11, 12, and the separate blades are arranged on pulleys of different diameters so that the units can interfit with their blades crossing at a point A as seen in the direction at right-angles to the pulley axes. The pitch between the blades and the distance of the inner blade from a fence 15 can be adjusted by simultaneous movement of the upper and lower pulleys of each unit on slides 31, 32 by means of a hand wheel 34 and chain 35. The gearing of the motors is arranged so that the blades all run at the best cutting speed. For tensioning the blades, the upper pulley of each unit is carried by an arm 21 which is loosely mounted in a block 22 sliding in a slot in the frame and is guided by a block 25 movable in an arcuate slot 26 so that, on adjustment of the arm by a hand wheel 36, the pulley moves up or down in a straight line. The blade runs may also be horizontal.
