Abstract

845,035. Grooving the ends of clay &c. pipes. ELLIOTT, P. A. Nov. 26, 1958 [Jan. 1, 1958], No. 61/58. Class 87(2). Circumferential grooves are provided at each end of a green section of stoneware pipe, having spicot and socket ends, e.g. a tee-piece, by apparatus comprising a set of ribbed rollers which treat one end at a time, while the fitting is centred and held against rotation on a conical or tapering mandrel. A rotary shaft 14 is provided with three collars 1, 11, 13 rigidly attached thereto, between collars 1, 11 there are loosely mounted a frusto-conical drum 2 with a flange 2a and a disc 3 which carries radially adjustable screws 4 having levers 7 pivoted at their outer ends. Each lever 7 carries a rotatable ribbed roller 5 at one end and a guide roller 9 at the other end held in abutment with an inclined ramp 10 by a tension spring 8. The ramps are supported by radial arms 12 attached to collar 13, said arms carrying rollers 12a engaged by forks 3a extending from disc 3 to transmit the rotary movement of shaft 14 to said disc. The spigot end of a pipe is centred on drum 2 as shown and pushes said drum and disc 3 along shaft 14, thus causing rollers 5 to engage its external end surface and provide grooves for keying jointing material. Fig. 2 (not shown), depicts apparatus for grooving the internal end of a socket pipe joint. A trimming knife may be attached to the apparatus.
