Abstract

844,608. Boring earth. MARSHALL, G. W. Oct. 31, 1956 [Oct. 31, 1955; Oct. 31, 1956], Nos. 1211/60 and 1212/60. Divided out of 844,607. Class 85. [Also in Group XXIII]. A drilling machine for downward drilling having a drill unit secured to the end of a plurality of members, which are increased in number as drilling proceeds, is provided with a piston and cylinder assembly, either the piston or the cylinder being attached to a support and the other to the member supporting the drill unit, and pressure fluid is admitted to the cylinder to effect counter-balancing of the weight of the drill unit and members. As shown, a drill unit 23 is suspended by a number of members 25 from a boom 1 provided with a screw and nut device 2, 5 carrying a carriage 4 for advancing the drill. The uppermost member 25 is secured to a motor 24 for rotating the drill unit, and the motor 24 is attached to a piston 7 in a cylinder 6 to which pressure fluid may be supplied to counter balance the weight of the drill unit and the members, the cylinder 6 being attached to the carriage 4. The piston and cylinder may be arranged so that pressure fluid may also be admitted on the other side of the piston to apply pressure in the direction of drilling, and the drill unit and members may be suspended from the cylinder, the piston being attached to the carriage (Fig. 2, not shown). Specification 714,663 also is referred to.
