Abstract

522,734. Rock &c. drills. HOLMAN BROS., Ltd., and COCK, B. Dec. 14, 1938, No. 36445. [Class 124] A percussive or rotary rock or like drill is fed with respect to a relatively fixed support by means directly driven from a motor which is controlled in accordance with the relative positions of a part of the drill pertaining to or moving with the drill bit and another part of the drill. In the form shown, the drill 11 is advanced along a cradle 10 by means of a feed screw 12 in engagement with a sleeve 14 having external gear teeth 15 rotated directly by a fluid pressure motor. The pressure fluid under the control of a main valve 25 is supplied to a channel 26 and small-bore passages 27, 28 to the two ends of a differential piston valve 24. When the bit 16 is advanced, a shoulder 20 on the chuck 17 engages a spring-controlled ball valve 21 to open a passage 23 to atmosphere. The valve 24 moves upwardly, air being admitted at 30, and pressure fluid is supplied by a conduit 29 to the motor which rotates the sleeve 14 to advance the drill. In one modification, the ball valve 21 is replaced by a piston valve ; in a second the chuck itself acts as a. piston valve ; in a third the shoulder 20 engages a spring-urged push rod connected to the valve 24 ; and in a fourth and fifth the percussive piston 18 and the sleeve 14, respectively, operate a ball valve corresponding to valve 21.
