Abstract
783,820. Portable drilling-machines. ARO EQUIPMENT CORPORATION. Aug. 2,1955 [March 21, 1955], No. 22206/55. Class 83 (3). A portable drilling-machine has a rotary air-motor 68 for driving the drill, the motor being fed axially by a piston 58 on the casing thereof reciprocated within a cylinder 60 by air pressure. A further piston 22 on the motor casing slides within a cylinder 30, separated from cylinder 60 by a wall 40, and acting as a dashpot to regulate the feed of the drill. The rotor 70 of the motor drives, through a hollow shaft 72, gearing 76 by which the drill 80 is rotated. A control valve 64 supplies air through a tube 66 to the motor, and also to the appropriate side of the feed piston 58. Dash-pots.-On forward feed of the drill by air pressure above piston 58, oil in cylinder 30 passes from below piston 22 by a duct 84 and an adjustable needle-valve 94 to a passage 92 above piston 22 to allow the drill to be fed at a pre-set drilling speed, but a rapid approach to the work may be obtained by uncovering one or more ports 42, by adjusting a slide valve 44 so that oil may by-pass valve 94 through ducts 36, 38. The valve 44 is adjusted and set by a knob 46. For the return stroke, air is admitted below piston 58 and the oil pressure above piston 22 opens a valve 34 in the piston to by-pass valve 94 and allow rapid withdrawal of the drill.
