676,805. Drilling machines; machine tool details. CLIMAX ROCK DRILL & ENGINEERING WORKS, Ltd. Feb. 13, 1951 [Dec. 14, 1949], No. 32136/49. Class 83 (iii). A power feed unit comprises a cylinder 6 and a working piston 7 which is advanced by compressed air, the rate of advance being limited by the escape of a confined volume of liquid through adjustable ports 48, 50. The liquid passes into a cylinder 30. On the return stroke, compressed air is admitted to the rear of a piston 31 and the liquid is passed rapidly back through a valve 53. The unit is mounted on the feed-spindle 2 of a conventional lever-fed drill 1. A rack 11 on the piston 7 engages a pinion 12 on the spindle 2. The initial position of the drill is determined by an adjustable stop 22 and the initial feed rate by one of a number of pairs of ports 44 which can be brought into co-operation with an appropriate pair of ports 39-43. Advance of the piston 7 is slowed to a feed rate when the ports 39 are covered and, just before the break-through, the port 48 is also covered. A spring 55 prevents air-locks and a screw 56 enables the system to be initially over-filled. An adjustable stop 65 on the shaft 2 automatically reverses the drill at the end of a stroke by striking a projection 66 on the hand-lever 63. The piston 7 may be attached directly to the drill-head, or may be connected to the machine through a flexible shaft.
