Abstract
844,469. Tanks. CHICAGO BRIDGE & IRON CO. Oct. 10, 1957 [Feb. 13, 1957], No. 31679/57. Class 69 (1). A floating roof storage tank comprises a flexible, fabric pocket seal 113 located in the annular space between the floating roof 110 and the tank shell 111, a fluid in the pocket 113 and in direct contact therewith to maintain the sides of the pocket in direct contact sealing relationship to the roof and shell, and means for supporting the pocket from the floating roof 110, said means having an annular flexible support acting on the lower side of the pocket, said support being movable laterally in relation to said floating roof and attached to the floating roof. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the lower seal supporting member 129 is supported by means of a plurality of vertical bars 140, attached by means of a sleeve 141 to corresponding horizontal support arms 142 which are suspended from the lower portion of the floating roof 110 by inclined parallel hanger bars 143A, 143B. A bumper 148 is attached to each of the support bars 140. The bumpers bear against the interior surface 111 of the tank shell when the roof 110 is floating off-centre or at points of inward shell distortion. The lower portions of the tank are generally circular but sometimes the upper portions of the tank become distorted into an elliptical shape. The lower seal supporting member 129 is normally a circular ring. As the roof floats upwards with the filling of the tank the tank shell 111 will approach the bumpers 148 at the small diameter of the ellipse until contact is made. The continued upward movement of the roof will cause the tank shell to distort the member 129 inwardly at the minor diameter of the shell and outwardly at the major diameter. The hinge bars 143A, 143B are initially inclined at a small angle to the vertical so as to pre-tension the member 129. This pre-tensioning tends to carry the member 129 outwardly at the major diameter. In a modification shown in Fig. 5 the annular support which holds up the bottom portion of the fabric pocket is suspended from the upper annular support by wires 175. A bumper 176 is provided. A parallelogram support assembly supports the upper portions of the fabric seal.
