Abstract

844,178. Broaching; drawing. SALLE STEEL CO. Sept. 30, 1957 [Oct. 11, 1956], No. 30512/57. Classes 83 (3) and 83 (4). A method of finishing a metal bar or rod, particularly of round, oval or square section, consists in passing it through two axially-spaced dies separated by a confined space 14 containing a fluid. The first die 10 is a sintered carbide or h.s.s. cutting-die, having a rake angle of 10 to 40 degrees and a clearance angle of 1 to 15 degrees behind a flat land 30. Fluid, such as a phosphated fluid for lubricating and cooling, is supplied to the space 14 under a pressure up to 10,000 1bs./sq. inch, as by a hand pump. The cut may be up to 0.02 inch at up to 1000 ft./min. The second die 12 is a drawing die having a reduction draft up to 0.06 inch.
