Abstract

908,063. Broaching; drawing. SALLE STEEL CO. Oct. 20, 1958, No. 33676/60. Divided out of 908,061. Classes 83 (3) and 83 (4). A method of shaving, or cutting a groove in, elongate metal bars, rods, tubes &c. to remove a surface portion in a continuous cold finishing operation comprises introducing a material between the cutting edge of the shaving tool and the metal to produce a reaction product which lessens welding of the metal to the tool. The tool is as described in Specification 908,061. The material may be fluid from which chlorine or other halide, phosphorus or sulphur compounds can be made available, e.g. carbon tetrachloride. The tool may be associated with a reduction die or guide 30, Fig. 3, and a reduction die 24, or with a combined die and guide 24, Fig. 2. The tool may be oscillated, reciprocated or rotated as in Specification 908,064. A chip breaker may be provided as a separate tool or combined with the shaving tool. Specifications 844,178, 908,062 and 908,065 also are referred to.
