[Also in Group XXV] A dashpot for a door operating device, (see Group XXV) comprises a piston 37 and a cylinder 29 jacketed by an annular fluid reservoir 30. On an opening movement of the door, when the piston travels to the right, fluid passes through non-return valves 39 to the rear of the piston. On a closing movement the fluid behind the piston passes relatively easily through a port in the screwed insert 41 until this is passed by the piston, subsequently the fluid flows only through passages, in a valve body 34, restricted by an adjustable screw 35. The material of the body 34 which may be a synthetic plastic, is so chosen that its thermal expansion compensates for thermal changes in the viscosity of the fluid.
