Abstract

842,889. Induction furnaces. OHIO CRANK SHAFT CO. Oct. 11, 1956 [June 29, 1956], No. 31071/56. Class 39(3). [Also in Group XXXV] A high-frequency induction furnace comprises an inductor coil 16 made in three separate one-turn sections A, B, C, and embedded in a refractory lining 14 surrounding a crucible 13; coolant tubes 17 are provided. The sections A, B, C are electrically connected independently of one another to an auto-transformer 19 energized from a high frequency power source, provision for varying the voltage across each coil section being made by manually operated contactors 25 interlocked or otherwise mechanically inter-connected to prevent the possibility of short-circuiting between the transformer tappings. Power factor correction condensers 29 are connected across the coil sections, and metering devices 30 enable the current flow in each section to be determined. The contactors may be electrically remotely controlled and they may be operated automatically in accordance with the current charges indicated by the meters. The independent control of separate coil sections permits compensation for the differing current distribution which normally occurs in a single-turn coil melting furnace. The furnace includes a housing 11 in which a vacuum may be established by means of a vacuum pump connection 12.
