Abstract

A light-weight aggregate for concrete, e.g. foamed slag, pulverized fuel ash pellets, or exfoliated vermiculite, is coated with bitumen or tar in sufficient quantity to render the particles water-repellent for the time required for the cement to set but not sufficient to act as a binder or to prevent the aggregate from flowing. The coating may be applied hot or in the form of a solution or emulsion.
