Abstract
842,549. Borehole apparatus. SMITH, R. March 20, 1959, No. 9731/59. Classes 68(1) and 85. A deep well chain saw for cutting radial slots at the bottom of a well bore comprises a saw 171 (Fig. 1) which is lowered into the well on a string of drill tubing to the depth of the well casing 20, which stops short of the bottom of the well. The saw, which is driven by an hydraulic turbine 112, controlled by a valve 109 operated from the surface, can be pivoted (while running) to the horizontal position thus cutting a curved radial slot in the rock strata. The whole apparatus can be lifted to extend the slot vertically. The apparatus is suspended at the surface by a frame which supports the drill tubing and which has means for producing relative movement between the drill tubing and a rod 72 which is connected on to a block 96. The block serves as an abutment for one end of a spring 108 which bears on the hydraulic fluid valve 109. Secured to the block is a rod 120 which is connected through the balanced springs 157 and 158 to a coupling 152. The lower end of the coupling is pivoted to a link 160 which is in turn pivoted to a pair of plates 167. The plates carry the frame on which the chain-saw runs and they pivot about the axis of one of the chain sprockets 160. The sprocket is chain driven from another sprocket which is mounted on the same shaft as a bevel wheel which is driven by a second bevel wheel, connected to the turbine through a universal coupling 145.
