Abstract

842,526. Covers for vehicles. GROTH, O. I., CARLSON, S. H., and CARLSON, K. A. I. June 13, 1958 [June 19, 1957], No. 18961/58. Classes 103(2) and 103(4). A covering structure comprising side walls 2, Fig. 2, roof 3, floor 4 and end wall 5 is mounted on a base-frame of a railway truck. A flexible cover 6 is drawn to or withdrawn from beneath the roof 3 over an unobstructed opening extending over a portion of the roof and opposite the end wall 5 by means of wires 8, 9, to facilitate loading and unloading. The side portions of the cover 6 are each guided in grooves 11, Fig. 4, formed from an angle-iron 14 secured to the inside of side walls 2 and an angle-iron 15 with one flange 16 engaging the outside of wall 2 and another flange 17 extending perpendicularly within the wall 2. Shaped sliding blocks 18, Fig. 5, run in the grooves 11 and are secured to each end of rigid bars 19 supporting the cover 6 and extending transversely across the opening to take up transverse tensile forces between the side walls. Reinforcing strips 23 in the shape of yokes are secured to the blocks and riveted at 24 to the bars 19. Protective strips of rubber and metal 25, 26 are secured to flange 17 to cover the groove 11 when the cover is withdrawn to prevent water or obstructions from entering. In a modification, the front end of cover 6, Fig. 8, is secured to an endless chain 9<SP>1</SP> which is led over wheels 10, 27, 28 and enclosed by a shield 29. A portion of the chain runs on a ridge projecting into the groove and the sliding blocks rest on the upper side of the chain.
