Abstract

Fertile material for use in breeder reactors is formed by adding up to 50% by weight of thoria to a molten low-melting point metal or alloy which is nondispersive to thoria and agitating the mixture to form a slurry in the presence of one or more added metals selected from a class of metals which are capable of forming oxides more stable than the oxides of carbon at the temperature of formation of the slurry, the total number of atoms of the added metals not exceeding one third of the number of thorium atoms added. The added metals may be selected from Al, Ba, Ca, Fe, Mg, Si, Na, Ti, U, Zn, Zr. The metal in which the thoria is dispersed may be Bi, Pb or an alloy of these metals. The added metal may be derived from a stirrer or the walls of the container in which the slurry is prepared in an inert atmosphere such as nitrogen.
