Abstract

Lactonitrile is removed from aqueous media containing it (e.g obtained by the aqueous scrubbing of acrylonitrile and fractionation to recover acrylonitrile) by decomposing the lactonitrile to HCN and acetaldehyde under alkaline conditions at an elevated temperature, removing the decomposition products substantially as rapidly as they are formed, and passing their vapours into an aqueous acid medium having a pH of 3/m12 or lower to retard their recombination. The decomposition of the lactonitrile is preferably carried out at a temperature from 100 DEG to 300 DEG F., more preferably above the boiling point of the lactonitrile mixture. The decomposition may be effected in a column, the decomposition products being passed to a condenser maintained below 150 DEG F., part of the vapours condensing and being used as a reflux liquid.
