Abstract
841,693. Blasting devices. DRESSER INDUSTRIES Inc. Feb. 7, 1957, No. 4243/57. Class 9(1). An explosive charge unit for a well perforator comprises a hollow charge in a metal housing of which at least part is made up of adjacent coaxial rings. The charge 11 with its metal liner 14 is seated in the base 1 of the housing which may be of steel, diecast zinc, aluminium or synthetic resin. The base 1 has a cylindrical boss 2 bored to receive a fuze cord 6 and also houses a booster charge 9, which may have an additional casing 9a, 9b. Between a flared portion 4 of the base 1 and a ring 15, adapted to engage a retainer, the housing consists of ring members 20. A thin metal casing 17 may cover the explosive charge within the housing. The members 20 may be cemented together or they may be part of an integral structure, Fig. 3, in which annular slots are cut. The slots may extend inwards from the outer surface or, as in Fig. 3, may extend from the inner surface nearly to the outer surface. The number of rings may be varied to control the diameter of the hole cut by the gaseous jet when the charge is fired.
