Abstract
841,577. Transistor amplifying circuits. PHILCO CORPORATION. Sept. 28, 1956 [Sept. 29, 1955], No. 29679/56. Class 40(6). A gain controlled transistor amplifier comprises a parallel tuned input circuit coupled to the input electrodes of a transistor through a reactance having a high value compared with the input resistance of the transistor so that changes of input resistance of the transistor as the gain control voltage varies can be made to influence the bandwidth of the amplifier in a desired manner. The Figure shows a transistor IF amplifier comprising a tuned inter-stage coupling circuit 46 and a coupling capacitor 60 having a reactance high compared with the input resistance of the transistor 36. An AGC voltage is applied to the base electrodes of two I.F. transistors causing the input impedance to increase as the signal increases. Capacitor 60 may have such a value that the band width remains constant as the input resistance of transistor 36 changes or may provide over-compensation so that the changes of resistance of the collector 45 also do not change the band-width of the amplifier. The capacitor 60 also helps to provide an impedance match between the circuit 46 and the transistor 36. In an alternative circuit Fig. 2, not.shown, the transistor is connected in grounded emitter configuration. An inductor could be used in place of the capacitor.
