Abstract
841,217. Laminates and laminating. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. May 30, 1958 [May 31, 1957], No. 17361/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 140. Laminates having surface layers on one or both sides of metal such as copper. especially electrolytic copper foil, anodized aluminium or molybdenum, and having other layers of polytetrafluoroethylene which may be reinforced with glass or asbestos fabric or mot, or may contain inorganic fillers such as glass fibres or powder, are made by coating the preferably roughened metal surface with P.T.F.E., preferably in the form of a dispersion, heat-treating the coating above the sintering temperature of the P.T.F.E. to bond it to the metal, applying the metal, coated side inwards, to one or both sides of an assembly of P.T.F.E. laminµ, and bonding the whole together with pressure and heat above sintering temperature. The P.T.F.E. laminµ may be made by repeatedly immersing glass fabric in a dispersion of the resin, drying between each immersion, and finally drying in an oven to remove all volatile matter, or by cold pressing P.T.F.E. powder, with or without an inorganic filler, into sheets. The products may be used in making printed circuits. Electrical grades of glass fabric may be used. The press used may have electrically-heated steel platens which may be backed by hollow steel platens, used for initial steam heating and subsequent water cooling, and may have between them and the laminates under pressure, plates of ductile metal such as a magnesium alloy, or layers of asbestos paper, to secure even pressure distribution.
