841,165. Telescopes. LEITZ (CANADA) Ltd., E. Dec. 5, 1957 [Dec. 10, 1956], No. 37873/57. Class 97(1) An optical sighting and aligning instrument has a first reticle arranged in the focal plane, or an objective, an eyepiece for observing this reticle, a beam divider positioned between the objective and its focal plane to allow part of a beam from the objective to reach the first reticle and directing another part of the beam to deflecting means and a second reticle both provided, near the objective, means being provided for observing the second reticle. As shown, the telescope 6 is axially movable by a rack and pinion 7 in a stand 6a for focusing and has a semitransparent plate 14 carried by the stand and disposed between the objective 8 and twin eyepieces 12, 13. This plate allows part of the light from objective 8 to reach a reticle 11 in the focal plane of the objective and the reticulus part of the incident light on to a reflecting surface 10 and a reticle 91 which is imaged by a lens 16 in the eyepiece 13. In this way an image of an illuminated reticle 4 in the focal plane of an objective 2 is in focus in eyepiece 12 which an image of a reticle 3 is formed as reticle 91 and so is in focus in eyepiece 13. A single eyepiece may be used in which case prismatic reflectors direct the light from lens 16 through two right angles into the eyepiece.
