Abstract

632,466. Microscopes. O'BRIEN, D. J. Nov. 17, 1947, No. 30468. Convention date, Sept. 25, 1945. [Class 97 (i)] A microscope comprises a specimen block carrying a stage and a guide surface, and a lens block having a guide surface engaging that of the specimen block for relative movement, one of the blocks having a supporting base and the lens block having an objective over the stage, a laterally displaced eye-piece mounted approximately in a plane through the objective perpendicular to its axis, and a reflecting system between objective and eyepiece and including a reflector situated below the objective. As shown, the specimen block 10 has a base 11, a recess having a rotatable illuminating mirror 32 and covered by a stage 25 and a column 12 having a guide surface engaging a dovetail slide 78 on the lens block. The latter carries one or more objectives 55, 56, rotatable or slidable thereon, reflectors 71, 72, 73, 75 and an eye-piece 61 and is moved relative to the specimen block for focussing by a pinion 81 engaging a rack 79 thereon. A modification is described in which the lens block is formed in one with the base and the specimen block comprising stage and mirror is slidable thereon by rack and pinion for focussing, the reflectors 73, 75 being replaced by a single reflecting prism directing the light to an eye-piece having its axis inclined to that of the objective.
