[Also in Group XIII] In a tower 1 for cooling liquid such as water, some of the cooling-air entering a peripheral opening 11 passes below packing 33 to openings 15 to enter a central casing 16 containing packing 32 and a fan 3 which, except in cold weather, when it is stopped, directs that air into the tower. The remainder of the cooling- air passes up around the casing 16, the top of which may be divergently conical. The water to be cooled passes from a duct 13 through passages 4, 5 to distributing pipes 6 of the natural-draught section around the casing 16 and through channels 7 to distributing pipes 6 of the fan section within the casing. Valves in the passages apportion the water flow to the cooling sections, and either may remain unsupplied with water. The speed of the fan 3 is variable so that the proportion of the airflows through the two sections may be varied. There may be several fan-and-casing units in one tower.
