Abstract

Thickened lubricating oils and lubricating greases are prepared by gradually adding a gel of an inorganic gel material in a volatile organic liquid to a hot lubricating oil and maintaining the oil at an elevated temperature during the addition so that the organic liquid rapidly evaporates. The inorganic gel material may be a metallic oxide, hydroxide, sulphide, silicate, sulphate or carbonate or a mixture of such substances. Silica may also be employed, especially in admixture with alkaline earth metal hydroxides. The volatile organic liquid may be an alcohol (e.g. ethyl alcohol, the propyl alcohols, diacetone alcohol, cyclohexanol or methyl cyclohexanol), a ketone (e.g. acetone, diethyl ketone or methyl ethyl ketone), an ether (e.g. isopropyl ether or dioxane), an ester (e.g. methyl or ethyl acetate), a diol (e.g. propylene, butylene or hexylene glycol), a diglycol (e.g. dipropylene or dibutylene glycol), a glycol monoalkyl ether, a glycerine mono- or di-alkyl ether, an amine (e.g. an alkanolamine) or a heterocyclic base (e.g. pyridine or morpholine). Volatile hydrocarbons are also mentioned but are not preferred. The lubricating oil may be a mineral oil (e.g. bright stock) or a synthetic oil or a mixture of both. Synthetic oils mentioned are esters of aliphatic dicarboxylic acids (e.g. dialkyl sebacates or adipates), polyoxyalkylene compounds (e.g. polyglycols or alkylene oxide polymers) and polysiloxanes. Antioxidants (e.g. phenyl alpha- or beta-naphthylamine) and surface-active agents may also be present. The surface-active agent may be cationic, anionic or non-ionic. Cationic surface-active agents mentioned are salts (e.g. halides or acetates) of organic ammonium, phosphonium, sulphonium arsonium or stibonium bases, and especially amine salts, salts of heterocyclic nitrogen compounds and quaternary ammonium salts; also amines, amido-amines and partial amides derived from acrolein/ammonia, halohydrin/ammonia or halohydrin/amine condensation products. Anionic surface-active agents mentioned are fatty acids or their soaps. If desired, the particles of the gel material may be coated with an esterifying or polymerizable silicon compound, such as an alkyl halo silane, an alkyl alkoxy silane or an alkoxy amino silane. The polymerizable silicon compound may be polymerized in the presence of the gel material. The removal of the volatile organic liquid from the hot lubricating oil by evaporation need not be complete and the thickened lubricating oil or lubricating grease may be subjected to milling or shearing. In examples, lubricating greases are prepared from (a) silica gel in isopropyl alcohol, stearic acid partial amide of epichlorhydrin/ammonia condensate, phenyl beta-naphthylamine and hot mineral oil or hot dioctyl sebacate, polymethyl phenyl siloxane also being added in one instance; or (b) silica gel in petroleum spirit, dimethyl diethoxy silane and hot mineral oil.
