Abstract

840,883. Moulds for tyres &c. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Feb. 4, 1957 [Feb. 25, 1956], No. 5950/56. Class 87()2. One side of a section of microporous material, e.g. sintered stainless steel, forms at least part of the inner surface of a mould, for example a tyre mould, and a second side is exposed to the ambient atmosphere. The first side is coated and /or impregnated with non-metallic air permeable material, for instance silicone rubber, whereby air escapes from between the inner mould surface and the material being moulded. Part of the mould I, Fig. 1, is formed by an annulus 2 of sintered stainless steel and one side 4 is coated and impregnated with silicone rubber, which may include 2-5 parts by weight of polytetrafluoroethylene in every 100 parts. The second side 6 of the annulus covers a number of air vents 7 in the mould. Sintered bronze may be preferred instead of steel for the microporous annulus and air may be vented through the tyre beading or the tread. Fig. 3 (not shown), illustrates the application of the invention to the moulding of concave rubber articles.
