Abstract

840,540. Catch gear for mine cage apparatus. ZELM, W. Y. VAN. April 8, 1958 [Feb. 17, 1958], No. 11015/58. Class 78 (3). [Also in Groups XXXIII and XXXIV] An energy-absorbing device, operative in the event of the winding cable of a mine shaft winding installation breaking, comprises a stationary solid elongated metal member disposed between two sets of rollers which are mounted on the cage and are moved from an inoperative position into an operative position in which the two sets intermesh and relative movement of the metal member and the sets of rollers causes deformation of the member beyond the elastic limit of the metal. A frame 52 on the cage, moving along metal strips 50, 51, comprises members 53 carrying brackets 54 to which are pivoted members 55, 56; members 53 support a set of rollers 57 and members 55, 56, a set 58 which is held spaced from set 57 by springs acting on pistons in cylinders 61, the piston-rods 60 being attached to members 55, 56 by cross-pins 62. Cables 63, 66 form part of a cage suspension and whilst cable 63 is tensioned a valve in unit 64 is closed, but should the cable 63 become slack then the valve is opened to admit hydraulic fluid from an accumulator in unit 64 via line 65 to cylinders 61 to move the sets of rollers together and as the frame moves along the strips, the strips are deformed, thereby arresting the falling cage.
