Abstract
840,455. Band brakes. BRITISH RAYON RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Dec. 1, 1958 [Oct. 22, 1957], No. 32871/57. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XXXII] To damp torsional oscillations in a roller, the length of which is many times its diameter, restraint is applied to the end of the roller opposite to the end which is driven. The restraint may take the form of a brake comprising a leather strap 18, having a weight 19 attached to one end, the opposite end of the strap being attached to the frame of a machine 20. The strap passes over a wheel 17 connected to a roller 11 the oscillations of which are to be damped. Alternatively braking may be provided by taking a drive from the wheel 17 to a subsidiary driving roller. A further alternative is shown in which a weighted roller is placed in contact with the rollers 11, 13. Brakes of other types may be used, such as disc brakes, electromagnetic brakes or eddy current brakes.
