A tiltable wheel-head mounting of the kind wherein the spindle-16 is carried in bearings 15 supported by the end plates 13 of a housing 9, which at its lower portion is formed with a curved segmental wall provided with a dovetail rib 17 movable in a corresponding arcuate groove in the head of a fixed column 1, has each end plate 13 curved at its lower part and provided with a rib of dovetail section corresponding to and forming an extension of the rib 17. The rib 17 is secured after adjustment of the head between the arcuate wall of a groove 4 and a clamping plate 6, the centre of curvature of the groove being such as to allow the parts to be machined by a normal turning operation. The driving motor comprises a rotor 19 secured to the spindle 16 and a stator 20 suspended from the top 12 of the main housing. Baffle plates 21 define inner and outer chambers 23, 22, but annular clearances 26 provide communication therebetween to allow an outflow of the cooling air supplied from a compressed air source to the inner chamber through an opening 10 in the base of the housing 9 ; outlets 24 from the outer chambers 22 are formed at the top of each side plate 13 and are provided with protective shields 25.
