Abstract

1353123 Roll construction W HUFNAGL and P VON SIGRIZ 17 March 1972 [17 March 1971] 12751/72 Heading B3M [Also in Division F2] A roll which is suitable for use in conjunction with a similar roll for rolling metal wire, has a force hydraulically exerted on it during rolling to counteract the force acting on the roll by the wire which tends to break or burst the roll. In the embodiment shown, the grooved working portion 1 of the roll is clamped between a collar 3 and an annular piston 2. The piston is housed in a cylinder 5 and exerts a compressive force on the roll portion 1. The cylinder space may be filled with synthetic plastics material injected under pressure, or may be operated hydraulically or pneumatically. The piston 2 may be shaped to act on the outer edge of the portion 1, and may be provided with an annular recess 11. Wedges 8 are acted on by an extension 7 of the piston to prevent axial movement of the portion 1 relative to its supporting shaft 6. The portion 1 may be formed in two halves which abut along the dotted line shown. Vibration damping material may be positioned between the collar 3 and portion 1, and the portion may be provided with cooling passages.
