Abstract
840,168. Gear-cutting. GLEASON WORKS. Feb. 26, 1959 [March 10, 1958], No. 6722/59. Class 83 (3). A gear-cutting machine comprises a tool T cutting intermittently, and a slide 32 movable to effect feed between the work and tool, a movable stop 65 for limiting the feed-motion, and means 94 for clamping the slide while the tool is cutting. Tools T, T<SP>1</SP> are mounted on holders 15, 151 adjustable on the slides 14, 141, which are guided on angularly-adjustable slideways 12, 121 on a cradle 11. The slides are reciprocated through a lever 17, by a crank 21 on a shaft 22 coaxial with the cradle. The tools cut on each side of a tooth of the work G. The work-spindle is carried on a head 26 adjustable on a slide 28, adjustable angularly about on axis 31 on a slide 32 movable on ways 33. The work axis 25, and the axes 13, 31, meet at a point. A motor 34 rotates the shaft 22 through tool-speed change-gears 37. When the slide 32 is in a withdrawn position, the work is indexed through gears 44, controlling the frequency of indexing, an intermittentlyengaged Geneva-type mechanism 41, 42, and gears 62 controlling the indexing angle. During one tooth-indexing cycle, a feed-cam 65 makes one revolution. It controls the feed of the slide 32 through an adjustable lever 76 and an hydraulic follower piston 73. The piston 73 is connected to a second piston 84, moving in a cylinder 85. The cylinder 85 is adjustable on the slide 32 to set the depth-of-cut, and can be moved through a lever 87 to withdraw the slide to an unloading position. Whenever one of the tools is cutting, the slide 32 is clamped to the base 10 by hydraulic clamps 94 activated by cams 104, 113, the slide being free to allow the piston 73 to feed towards the cam 65 only when the tools are not cutting.
