Abstract

1,177,203. Automatic lathes. G. C. WORRELL. 14 Feb., 1968, No. 7168/68. Headings B3B and B3T. In an automatic turret lathe having an indexable and reciprocatable turret 36 with a plurality of tool and/or work holding stations which correspond to a plurality of stations in a fixed headstock 26 means is provided for indexing and locking the turret in successive selected positions whereby workpieces machined from bar stock have subsequent machining operations performed thereon at the headstock stations in accordance with the indexing of the turret. The turret is reciprocated by cam and lever means 250, 240 and carries a plurality of non-rotary tool holders 50 and at least one rotary work-holding spindle 56 gear-driven from a drive spindle 63 and includes collet-type work-holding means 68. The headstock includes one work-holding rotary spindle 22 through which bar stock is fed by a reciprocating type gripper. The axis of rotation of the turret and the axis of the main spindle 22 are parallel and the turret and headstock stations are in coaxial alignment whereby indexing of the turret brings successive turret stations into co-operation with successive headstock stations. The indexing of the turret is effected by a Geneva mechanism 212, 210, 146 driven from a shaft portion 158 by a chain- and-sprocket drive 156, 154, 152. The shaft 158 is connected to a drive shaft 172 by a clutch 162 controlled by a cam and leveroperated mechanism 206, 190, 194 which sequetially operates the clutch 162 to drive the shaft 158 which effects actuation of the Geneva mechanism and indexing of the turret. Operating in co-operation with the indexing movement, a turret-locking mechanism is provided in the form of two diametrically-opposed slidable members 120 which engage in notches 110 in a notched plate 100 secured to and indexable with the turret. The slidable members 120 are actuated by levers 130, 140 from a rotary cam 146 driven by the chain-and-sprocket drive and hence the engaging and releasing of the notched plate 100 by the members 120 is in sequence with the desired indexing movements of the turret. The main drive from the motor M effects the rotation of the main spindle through belt and gear means as well as the sequential indexing and reciprocation of the turret, the turret reciprocation being effected when the members 120 are in engagement with the notched plate. In operation, workpieces machined from the bar stock in the main spindle 22 are partedoff from the bar held in the turret spindle 56 by the collet 68 and indexed therewith for machining as required by presentation thereof by the turret to the successive machining stations on the headstock, the finished workpiece being ejected from the turret spindle 56, after a completed sequence of operations and cycle of the turret, by a fresh length of bar stock fed from the machine spindle 22. Such operations as turning, boring, drilling and screwing may be effected on a workpiece during a complete machining cycle.
