In a process for compressing a gas containing hydrogen sulphide and nitric oxide, e.g. cokeoven gas, to pressures above 15 atm., e.g. to 30-50 atm., the gas is freed from hydrogen sulphide after leaving a stage in which it has been compressed to between 10-15 atm. The gas may be freed from hydrogen sulphide by washing with a solution containing potassium carbonate and bicarbonate.
