Abstract

A resin is made by reacting bis-(2 : 3-epoxycyclopentyl) ether with a polycarboxylic acid. The polycarboxylic acid may be in the form of a polyester having two or more free carboxyl groups and obtained by polyesterifying excess of a polycarboxylic acid or anhydride with a polyhydric alcohol. The reaction mixture may also contain a polycarboxylic acid anhydride in an amount such that if there are x carboxy equivalents of anhydride per epoxy equivalent and y carboxy equivalents of acid per epoxy equivalent then x + y is not greater than 2.5 and x/y is less than one. Many polycarboxylic acids, polyhydric alcohols and polycarboxylic anhydrides are specified. Reaction with the epoxide is generally effected at 50-250 DEG C., preferably using as a catalyst a mineral acid, a sulphonic acid, a metal halide Lewis acid or a complex thereof. The resins are suitable for use in coatings, castings, mouldings, bondings, laminates and potting electrical components and may be made into buttons, combs, brush handles or structural parts for instrument cabinets. Fillers, e.g. glass fibres, asbestos, iron oxide or aluminium oxide may be added. Examples describe the making of resins from bis-(2 : 3-epoxycyclopentyl) ether and (1)-(14) glutaric, adipic, pimelic, sebacic or ethylbutenyl succinic acids, (15) glutaric acid and glutaric anhydride. Further examples (16)-(30) describe making resins from bis-(2 : 3-epoxycyclopentyl) ether and polyesters from succinic anhydride and glycerol, succinic anhydride and 1,2,6-hexanetriol, succinic anhydride and pentaerythritol, maleic anhydride and ethylene glycol, dichloromaleic anhydride and ethylene glycol, phthalic anhydride and ethylene glycol, or adipic acid and glycerol.
