Abstract

In the examples:-(1) butane-1 : 2 : 4-tricarboxylic acid and succinic acid are made by oxidizing D 3-tetrahydrobenzaldehyde with nitric acid in the presence of ammonium vanadate, and (2) 3-methylbutane-1:2:4-tricarboxylic acid is made by oxidizing 6-methyl-D 3-tetrahydrobenzaldehyde with nitric acid in the presence of ammonium vanadate. The examples also describe the conversion of the acids to anhydrides by heating with acetic acid and acetic anhydride. German Specification 947,940 is referred to.ALSO:A process for curing a 1:2-epoxy compound having an epoxy equivalency greater than 1 comprises heating the said compound with an anhydride of the formula <FORM:0970444/C3/1> where R is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group. Specified epoxides are those made by reacting epichlorohydrin with phenol or cresol novolacs, resorcinol, pyrocatechol, hydroquinone, 1:4-dihydroxynaphthalene, bis - 4 - hydroxyphenyl - methylphenylmethane, bis-4-hydroxyphenyl-tolylmethane, 4:41-dihydroxydiphenyl, bis-4-hydroxyphenylsulphone, bis-phenol-A, oxalic acid, succinic acid, glutaric acid, adipic acid, pimelic acid, suberic acid, azelaic acid, sebacic acid, phthalic acid, isophthalic acid, diphenyl-o:o1-dicarboxylic or ethylene glycol-bis(p-carboxyphenyl)-ether and epoxidized diolefines, dienes or cyclic dienes of which many are specified. Plasticizers e.g. dibutyl phthalate, dioctyl phthalate or tricresyl phthalate, reactive diluents, e.g. butyl or cresyl glycide and extenders and fillers e.g. asphalt, bitumen, glass fibres, mica, quartz meal, cellulose, kaolin or colloidal silica may also be present in the mixtures. Examples are given.
