Abstract

1,156,269. Epoxy resin compositions. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 10 May, 1968, No. 22314/68. Heading C3B. A curable composition suitable for the manufacture of electrical insulators comprises: (I) a halogen-free non-aromatic polyepoxide; (II) a halogen free non-aromatic polyester having OH number of at least 30 (meq. OH/100 g.); and (III) a halogen-free non-aromatic polycarboxylic acid anhydride. The polyester II is obtained by reacting a halogen-free non-aromatic polyol having at least three OH groups with a halogenfree non-aromatic polycarboxylic acid, or a polyester forming derivative thereof, in the presence of a glycidyl ester of a monocarboxylic acid having a tertiary or quaternary α-carbon atom. II may be a cycloaliphatic polyepoxide, e.g. 3,4-epoxycyclohexylmethyl - 3<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>1</SP> - epoxycyclohexane carboxylate or its 6-methyl analogue, or diglycidyl hexahydrophthalate. III may be hexahydrophthalic anhydride. The equivalent ratio of I: III may be from 1: 0À8 to 1: 1À2, II may be present so as to provide 0À05 to 1 OH group for every anhydride group of III. A curing activator, e.g. a tertiary amine may also be present. Curing may take place at 100-200‹ C. Conventional fillers, pigments and extenders may be added to the composition.
