Abstract

Epoxy resins, suitable for use as adhesives, coating compositions, glass interlayers and for impregnating porous fibrous materials, e.g. glass fibres or for admixture with fillers, e.g. graphite or silica to give moulded articles, are obtained by heating diglycidyl ether with anhydrides of dibasic p acids, e.g. phthalic, tetrahydrophthalic, endomethylene tetrahydrophthalic, maleic or succinic. The polymers formed are stated to differ in the free linkages available according to the proportions in which the reactants are used. With 1 mol. anhydride to (a) 2 moles. ether, linear structure having free CH2- and O- bonds are obtained; (b) to 1 mol. ether, the free linkages are of the CH2-, O-, COO- and CO- types. The reaction may be carried out in presence of catalysts, e.g. triethanolamine, metal alcoholates, amides, urethanes and particularly oxazolidone substituted on the N atom, e.g. hydroxy ethyl oxazolidone, phthalamide, succimide, ethylene glycol carbamate and its chlorinated derivatives, or urea. In Example (1) various proportions of di-glycidyl ether and phthalic anhydride as shown in Table I were heated to 125 DEG C. in presence of 1% of oxazolidone-2. The mixture while fluid was poured into a mould and polymerization continued for times specified in the tables. Tables are also given of the effect on the final appearance of the resin by substitution of other anhydrides for the phthalic anhydride. Tables are also given illustrating the effect of using the following catalysts: urea, succinimide, phthalimide, dicyandiamide, chlorinated urethane of ethylene glycol, aluminium acetylacetonate, phenyl oxazolidone. Examples (6) and (7) describe the addition of graphite and silica.
