Class 117 [Also in Group XVI] Cards 2 are separated sequentially from the bottom of a container 1 by a reciprocating slider 4 having an upstanding knife edge 3, and fed between feed rollers 15, 16 which forward them between guides 25 in a cardpunching machine, the slider 4 and feed roller 15 being driven from the same shaft 12 such that the speed imparted to the cards by the slider is equal to or slightly greater than the peripheral speed of the roller. The slider 4 is carried on rocking levers 7, 8, and the pivot pin 9 of the latter is rocked by a lever 10 engaging a cam 13 secured on the drive shaft 12 which imparts a slow return movement, and a high forward movement, to the slider 4. After the card is punched, it is forwarded by a second set of rollers 21, 22. The shafts 12, 23 of the rollers 15, 21 are driven through gears 19, 20 and slipping clutches from a motor 18. While the card is passing through the guide 25 it is stopped periodically by known means connected to the gear 20. To ensure perfect registration of a card at the punching position in the guides 25, the roller 15 has an inclined recess 26 terminated by an abutment wall 27 in its periphery: the card enters the recess 26 as it emerges from the container 1, abuts the wall 27, and is then fed forward to the punching station. Similarly, as the card emerges from the punching station, it enters a similar recess 26 in the roller 21, and abuts a wall 27 therein. Pile tables; weighting arrangements:- A lid 43, Fig: 3, resting on the pile of cards 2 is pivoted unsymmetrically at 44 to a double-linked lever 45, 46 which is fixed on a pivot pin 47, and torque is applied to the pin 47 by a lever 48 provided with a weight 49, said torque increasing as the pile of cards diminishes. The lid 43 is lifted and tilted to allow cards to be inserted into the container 1 by the action of a slotted lever 54 on a pin 55 secured to the lever 46, the lever 54 being pulled upwardly when a side 50 of the container is hinged about its pivot 51. Safety devices:-When there are no cards left in the container a switch arm 57, Fig. 3, which normally presses against the bottom card, rises to open a switch 56 in the circuit of the driving motor of the punching device, or to operate a warning. A switch arm is also urged towards each feed roller 15, 21 to rest on a card, and each associated switch is opened, if a card is absent at predetermined periods of the card feeding cycle, due to the extra movement of the switch arms: cams rotating with the rollers 15, 21 maintain the switches closed during the intermittent periods in a normal feeding cycle when a card is not in position on a roller 15, 21.
