Abstract

838,261. Cleaning metals. RUTHNER, O. April 21. 1958 [Jan. 10, 1958]. No. 12586/58. Class 82(2) [Also in Group XL(b)] Wire or strip is pickled by being led upwards and downwards in a looped path one or more times in a gas-tight and acidresistant tower wherein it is sprayed with acid such as HC1 or H 2 SO 4 . As shown, wire 2 is fed from feed-reel 1 to take-up reel 13 via rolls 4, 5, 6 in tower 3, and is sprayed with acid from nozzles 11. Spent acid collects in tank 17 from which it is fed back to nozzles 11 through a recovery plant. The rate of travel of the wire and hence the pickling rate may be controlled by varying the speeds of reels 1, 13, or by raising or lowering roll 6, in response to the output of photo-electric cells 14 which measure the brightness of the wire.
