Abstract

838,197. Pipe joints; concrete pipes. LOCK JOINT PIPE CO. Aug. 6, 1958 [Oct. 23, 1957], No. 25165/58. Classes 99(1) and 99(2). In a spigot and socket joint for prestressed concrete pipes, a pipe section comprises a hollow concrete core 10 circumferentially compressed by a tensioned high-tensile steel wire 12 covered by a hardened coating 16 of cement mortar applied around the core, the socket 13 extending over an end portion of the coating 16. The latter forms a shoulder 17 between which and a bead 20 on the end of the core 10 is formed a recess for a rubber gasket 19 of circular cross-section sealingly engaging the socket 13 and the circumferential joint formed between the core 10 and the coating 16. As shown, coils forming part of the wire 12 are disposed in the portion of the coating 16 located within the socket 13, the terminal coil being located closely adjacent the shoulder 17. In a modification, the gasket is located between a sloping surface of the socket and a transverse surface provided by the coating.
