Abstract

838,144. Detecting radioactivity. BARCROSS Ltd. Oct. 15, 1958 [Oct. 15, 1957], No. 32210/57. Class 40 (3). A rise in radioactivity in dust particles in a gas is detected by passing the gas through a filter at a constant rate and detecting the radiation from particles trapped in the filter. Under steady conditions the increase in radiation due to new particles being trapped is balanced by the decrease due to natural decay of activity from the old particles, and the detector output is constant. A rise in output therefore denotes an increased number of radioactive particles being trapped. In the Figure a constant-speed displacement pump 13 sucks air into a chamber 15 via a filter paper 16. A Geiger counter 20 detects the beta radiation from the paper, and a further counter 23 measures the background radiation. Signals from the two counters are combined in a rate meter 22 and their difference operates a recording chart and audible alarm in a unit 25. A further warning is given if the pressure in the chamber 15 rises due to rupture of the filter paper. The Geiger counter can be replaced or supplemented by a scintillation counter and photomultiplier for detecting alpha radiation.
