Abstract
Mineral fibres are coated with an aqueous composition comprising a resinous polymer having free hydroxy groups, a quaternary ammonium compound and a Werner complex compound having a carboxylic acyl group containing more than 8 carbon atoms attached to a trivalent chromium atom, and are heated to harden the composition. The materials treated may be filaments, strands, yarns or fabrics of continuous or staple fibres made from glass, rock wool or mineral slag. Fabrics may be weave-set by heating to 1050 DEG to 1350 DEG F. before the treatment. The hydroxy resinous compound may be polyvinyl alcohol, a polyethylene or polypropylene glycol or a polyester resin having free hydroxy groups. The quaternary ammonium compound may be obtained by reacting an alkyl halide with triethanolamine or by reacting one of the amino groups of ethylene diamine with a fatty acid while the other is reacted with an alkyl halide, or may be derived from an amino-substituted coconut oil fatty acid or may be lauryl trimethyl ammonium chloride. Werner compounds specified are stearat chromic chloride, palmitic chromic chloride and oleyl chromic chloride. The composition may also include diethanolamine, triethanolamine or ethylene, propylene or butylene glycol, pigments or dyestuffs, and hydrochloric or acetic acid. The coated materials may be treated with a tinctorial agent, dried and heated at 250-400 DEG F. In the example, a glass fabric which has been weave-set at 1200 DEG F. is treated with an aqueous composition containing polyvinyl alcohol, a quaternary ammonium compound derived from diaminesubstituted coconut oil fatty acids and stearato chromic chloride, dried, heated at 360 DEG F., and after-treated with a quaternary ammonium compound and a wetting-agent. Specification 813,602 is referred to.
