Abstract
837,781. Steel refining furnaces. STEEL CO. OF WALES Ltd. March 24, 1958 [Aug. 1, 1957], No. 24449/57. Addition to 793,655. Class 51 (1). In an open hearth furnace a water-cooled oxygen gun 14 which may be of the type disclosed in the parent Specification, or Specification 824,333, is retractably mounted in an opening 15 in the back wall 12 on a steel framework 21 pivotally mounted at 22 and carrying pulleys 28, 29 and 30 supporting and guiding the gun. The framework 21 also carries a firebrick lined shield 24 covering the opening 15 during operation, a steel shield 40 protecting water supply pipes 32, 33 and oxygen supply pipe 34 during tapping, and members 39 defining guideways 38 for a guide bar carried by fins attached to the rear of the gun. The latter is retracted by an electric winch 46 connected by wire cable 47 to a lug 146 and forward movement is due to the weight of the gun assisted by weights 42 attached by a cable 43 to a lug 14a. The gun nozzle 50 is bent downwardly to an angle of about 52 degrees from the horizontal and is also bent to point approximately along the longitudinal furnace axis. A pipe 17 supplies cooling water to a helical tube member 16 surrounding the gun.
