Abstract

A lubricating composition comprises a major proportion of lubricating oil incorporating a minor proportion, e.g. up to 10 wt. per cent, of the gamma isomer of benzene hexachloride (hexachlorocyclohexane) substantially free from the other isomers. The gamma isomer is the lowest melting (113 DEG C.) of the isomers formed by the addition of chlorine to benzene in sunlight and constitutes 13% of the crude product. The lubricating oil may be a mineral oil or a synthetic oil such as a dicarboxylic acid diester, e.g. di(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate; a polyoxyalkylene glycol ether; a glycol ester, e.g. diesters of di- or tri-propylene glycol and n-octoic or pelargonic acid; and blends of diesters with water-insoluble polyoxyalkylene glycol ethers. The composition may also include other additives including organic sulphur or selenium compounds, e.g. <FORM:0837712/III/1> where R1 and R2 are alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl radicals or may together form part of a ring, R is CH2, R4CH or R4CR5, where R4 and R5 are hydrocarbon radicals, R3 is an alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl radical, and R1, R2 or R3 may contain halogen substituents, as described in Specification 797,316; dibenzyl-, or mono- or di-chloro dibenzyl-disulphide; compounds of the formula ROOC.CH2-(X)n-CH2.COOR, where X is S or Se, n is 2, 3 or 4 and R may be halogen substituted, as described in Specification 714,497; mercaptobenzothiazole, benzothiazole disulphide or hydroxymethyl sulphide; tetraalkylthiuram disulphides; aromatic hydroxy-substituted polysulphides having a carboxyl or ester substituent such as di(3-carbomethoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl) di-, tri- and tetrasulphides, which may also be mixed with some free sulphur, and the corresponding thio-ethers, as described in Specification 561,898; di(hydroxyaryl) thioethers; dibenzothiazines and dibenzoselenazines; and C20+ dialkyl selenides; heterocyclic nitrogen compounds, e.g. imidazole (glyoxaline); benzimidazole; pyrazole; benzotriazole; or indazole: and organic phosphorus compounds, e.g. zinc dialkyl thiolthionophosphates; the neutral phosphate esters described in Specification 757,241 such as <FORM:0837712/III/2> and <FORM:0837712/III/3> or phosphite esters such as <FORM:0837712/III/4> where R1, R2 and R3 are alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or cycloalkyl radicals and R4 is an alkylene or arylene radical; and phosphite esters of hydroxy-substituted aromatic thioethers such as (RO)2-P-O-Ar-S-Ar-O-P-(OR)2 or (RO)m-P-(O-Ar-S-Ar-OH)n where R represents hydrocarbon radicals which may have ether or ester substituents, Ar represents aromatic radicals which may have alkyl, ether or ester substituents, m is 0, 1 or 2 and n is 1, 2 or 3, m + n being 3. Examples include the following compositions: (1) mineral oil, g -benzene hexachloride, alkylated succinic acid and 2,4 - dimethyl - 6 - tertiary butyl phenol; (2) mineral oil, g -benzene hexachloride, alkylated succinic acid, calcium petroleum sulphonate and n - butyl (dimethyldithiocarbamyl) acetate; (3) di (2 - ethyl hexyl) sebacate, phenothiazine and g - benzene hexachloride; and (4) (a grease) mineral oil, lithium stearate and g -benzene hexachloride. Examples are also given contrasting the effectiveness of the g -isomer of benzene hexachloride with each of the other isomers and a commercial mixture of them all. The compositions disclosed in Specification 738,665 are disclaimed.
