Abstract

837,074. Gasefying powdered coal. SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. June 20, 1958, No. 19775/58. Class 55 (1). Pulverized coal entrained in such media as oxygen or water vapour is gasefied by an automatically-controlled process in which the total amount of oxygen required for gasefication is supplied partly from the oxygen used to transfer the coal from the feeder to the burner (preferably this comprises 80-90% of the total oxygen), and partly from oxygen from another source (20-10%) which is mixed into the coal stream at the entry to the burner, the temperature of the gasefication being automatically controlled by adjusting the amount of oxygen supplied by this latter source. As shown, an embodiment comprises a furnace 1 containing burners 2 (subscripts are ignored). Entrained pulverized coal passes from feeder 3 through supply rate detector 5 which governs adjustment meter 6, which meter controls valve 7, and is mixed in turn with oxygen which enters through 9 and water vapour which enters through 10. At the burner 2 the mixture is mixed with the oxygen of the second source which enters at 11, and with water vapour which enters at 12. Parts 13, 14, 15 and 16 are flow detectors connected to flow adjustment meters 17, 18, 19, and 20, which control valves 21, 22, 23 and 24, and hence the flow rates of oxygen and water vapour. The overall flow of oxygen to burner 2 from the second source is controlled by meter 26 which is connected to temperature detector 25, suitably a pyrometer. The overall flow of water vapour from the second source is similarly controlled by meter 28 which is governed by carbon dioxide detector 27, suitably an infra-red detector.
