Abstract
836,923. Tanks. WILLIAMS, W. P. (United Aircraft Products Inc.). May 30, 1957, No. 17243/57. Class 69 (1). A liquid storage tank 10 for use in a liquid circulating system of an aircraft includes an open-ended deaerator can 48 mounted within the tank to receive liquid returning from the circulating system and discharged into the tank and to remove any air entrained in the liquid, the deaerator can 48 extending between the normal top and normal bottom of the tank and being of such length that when the tank is in its normal upright position, one end of the deaerator can projects above the normal level 13 of liquid in the tank and, when the tank is inverted, the other end of the can projects above the liquid level. The tank 10 may be filled with oil through a connection 12. An oil return fitting 14 returns the oil from the lubricating and hydraulic systems. A cylindrical member 25 is rotatably mounted on a shaft 22 fixed in an intermediate horizontal plane of the tank 10. The shaft is provided with an enlarged central portion 33 and sealing means are provided to form separate chambers 35, 37. An elongated tube 45 communicates with the chamber 37 and projects into the space above the oil level 13. The chamber 35 communicates with a relatively heavy tube 46 which acts as a pendulum holding the assembly in such a position that the tube 46 extends downwardly towards the bottom of the tank. Tilting motions of the tank corresponding to diving and climbing attitudes of flight of the aircraft result in relative rotary movement between the tank 10 and the pendulum assembly 25, 45, 46 so that the open end of the tube 46 is always submerged in the body of oil in the tank. The chamber 35 also communicates with a tube 41 which delivers oil to the hydraulic system through a fitting 17. The tube 41 is fixed to a stationary boss 26 and does not rotate with the pendulum assembly 25, 45, 46 but will always be fed with oil from the tube 46 whatever the position of the tank. The oil return fitting 14 communicates with a conduit 47 which is directed into the open upper end of the deaerator can 48. The lower end of the can 48 terminates below the shaft 22 of the pendulum assembly. The oil from the conduit 47 is discharged tangentially into the can 48 to release the entrained air. This air rises through the upper end of the can to the space above the oil when it is vented by the tube 45 and a further tube 43 to an air vent 15 (Fig. 1). The tube 43 is fixed to a stationary boss 27 arid does not rotate with the pendulum assembly.
