In an apparatus for maintaining a constant volume of liquid in a container such as an engine sump, comprising upper and lower closed reservoirs 1, 2 inter-connected by a first feed pipe 3 and a first vent pipe 4 extending from the upper reaches of the upper reservoir 1 to the interior of the lower reservoir 2 and second feed and vent pipes 5, 6 extending from the interior to the exterior of the lower reservoir 2, the first and second pairs of pipes 3, 4 and 5, 6 are so arranged that when the apparatus is in an upright position the end of the second feed pipe 5 within the reservoir 2 is at a level below the end of vent pipe 4 and vent pipe 6 within the reservoir 2.
