[Also in Group XXXVI] A cat's whisker for point contact semi-conductor devices comprises a wire of good electrical and heat conductive properties and of some resilience, e.g. silver, gold, aluminium, copper, having a diameter between 0.002 inch and 0.007 inch, and containing along the whole or part of its length a substantially concentric core of tungsten of diameter between 0.00005 inch and 0.0005 inch. The whisker may be produced by drawing or rolling down a tubular wire 21 into tight contact with a tungsten core 22 which may extend along the whole length of the wire or, as shown, occupy an end portion of it; in the latter case, the part of the wire which has no core may be further drawn or rolled so as to close the bore behind the core. Alternatively, a core may be inserted in a blind bore in one end of the wire, which is then rolled or drawn down on to the core. At one end of the wire the core is exposed by etching to form a tip 23 for establishing a rectifying contact with a semi-conductor body.
