Class 68(1) Structually incorporated in the jetting head of hydraulic mining equipment are means that allow of observation of the action of the jets causing the hydraulic mining of a stratum so that the head can be raised, lowered and rotated about a vertical axis as a result of this observation so that the stratum can be mined with the maximum of efficiency. The observation means may consist of a chamber having viewing ports that is so constructed in the head that the chamber is accessible from ground level to an operator, a television circuit, or optical means. Vertically directed jets 39 enable the head to be sunk into the ground, and horizontally directed jets 37 enable a stratum to be mined out. The mineral is either sucked into the head and pumped up to the surface or is carried upwards by buckets on an endless chain reaching up about the head to ground level. At the bottom of the head may be mounted a bladed cutter disc rotatably driven about a vertical axis.
